Only eight runners will line up for Saturday’s featured 2016 Expressway Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens; representing terrific value from a betting standpoint and offering punters several key opportunities to place a winning wager.
Our Boy Malachi has not been seen at the races since bleeding during the running of the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) last May but remains clear favourite at Expressway Stakes odd of $2.30 for success with Ladbrokes.com.au ahead of Generalife ($3.50) and Solicit ($6).
Will Our Boy Malachi justify favouritism and return for success in the Expressway Stakes or will one of his talented rivals find the line in the clear?
Our Boy Malachi ($2.30)
Posting seventeen wins and two minors through only 21 career starts, Our Boy Malachi is undoubtedly the class horse of the 2016 Expressway Stakes field on his day and will be very hard to beat Saturday. Winning each of the Listed Starlight Stakes (1100m) and Listed Razor Sharp Handicap (1200m) in his first preparation for Team Hawkes last summer, the Top Echelon gelding returned in autumn for success in the Group 3 Hall Mark Stakes (1200m); progressing to third in the Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) in his only other start prior to the Doomben 10,000. Drawn ideally in barrier 4, Tommy Berry will take the ride on Saturday.
Consistent Godolphin runner Generalife will contest the 2016 Expressway Stakes first-up and should be delivered a gem of a ride by leading hoop James McDonald. Posting nine wins and a further ten minors through 33 career starts so far, the Lonhro gelding won the Group 3 Star Kingdom Stakes (1200m) upon resuming in 2015; progressing to fifth in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) before placing third in each of the Doomben 10,000 and Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1350m). Having continued to impress through a Spring Carnival campaign concluding with a second place finish in the Group 3 Kevin Heffernan Stakes (1300m) on November 14th, all signs suggest Generalife will finish in the first three on Saturday.
Big Money ($12)
Big Money has continued to produce strong and consistent results for Scone-based trainer Rod Northam through 20 career starts so far and is well and truly worth consideration for an Expressway Stakes bet at current $12 odds for success or $2.95 to finish in the first three. Posting an impressive total of nine wins and five minors, the son of Choisir is a multiple Stakes winner and is sure to have taken plenty of benefit from a first-up run for third in the Summer Sprint (1000m) at Randwick on January 16th.
