A talented field of just eleven runners have been nominated for Saturday’s featured Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens, highlighted by the inclusion of several previous winners at the highest level of racing.
Securing an impressive and easy barrier trial victory at Rosehill last week, trainer Chris Waller has included Boban in nominations for a return in the 2015 Expressway Stakes.
A three-time Group 1 winner, Boban undoubtedly found career-best form over the 2013 Spring Carnival in which he claimed five wins from as many starts, including both the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) and Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m).
Running on well to add the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) to his impressive record over the 2014 Autumn Carnival, the Bernardini gelding returned for fourth in the Group 2 Missile Stakes (1200m) on August 9th; placing fifth in each of the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) before returning to the paddock following a disappointing run for ninth in the Epsom Handicap.
Waller is set to launch a massive attack on the 2015 Expressway Stakes, having also included Bagman, Beaten Up, Hawkspur and Weary in nominations.
Securing 12 wins and a further 15 minor places over his 42 competitive starts so far, Bagman began his racing career under the guidance of Rochelle Pereira; passing through the stables of Mark Kavanagh and Sam Kavanagh before arriving in Waller’s care at the beginning of 2013.
Contesting a long and busy campaign through 2014, the son of Easy Rocking beat classy fields to the line in each of the Valley Handicap (2040m) and Badge Appeal Handicap (2000m) before placing third in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) and Group 2 Hill Stakes (2000m).
Having returned to the paddock following a credible run for fifth in the Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) on October 4th, Waller has been thrilled with the form and class displayed by the eight-year-old in his return to work and is confident of a positive first-up result in the Expressway Stakes.
A standout for Waller over the 2014 Autumn Carnival, classy French import Weary was unable to make much of an impact over three spring starts but has reportedly taken well to his time in the paddock and is ready for a racing return.
Running third in a minor over 1400m first-up before placing second in the Group 2 Ajax Stakes (1500m), Weary charged home to secure a ballot-free entry to the Major Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) when jogging home to win the Group 3 Doncaster Prelude (1500m) on April 5th; running third in the feature race just one week later.
Returning to the paddock following a close run for second in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m), the son of Astronomer Royal was unable to beat a single runner home in the Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400m) most recently in spring, but is sure to perform well over 1200m first-up in the Expressway Stakes.
Trainer Gai Waterhouse has included Group 1 winner Driefontein in nominations for the 2015 Expressway Stakes, while notable runners Panzer Division, Plucky Belle and That’s A Good Idea have also been included for racing returns this weekend.
