Classy mare Appearance has caused the boil-over of the day, comfortably claiming the Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) at Randwick ahead of River Lad and Sizzling, with resounding pre-post favourite Boban unable to break from the pack.
Holding a firm position just off the pace rounding the turn, Appearance quickly hunted down leader Rain Affair before pulling a wide gap to second, jogging home to record a stunning first-up victory.
Trainer Guy Walter was thrilled with the result,
“She’s a fantastic mare, her record shows that” Walter said following the triumph.
“She’s come out and beaten a top class field today and beaten them well .
“She had her problems last year, but went out and had a good spell and she’s been flying this time; I’m so pleased for her.”
A busy Autumn schedule is well and truly on the cards for the in-form Commands mare, with Walter outlining several major events as realistic possibilities.
“I think she could have a very big autumn ahead of her” Walter said.
“She’ll be nominated of course in the Doncaster and she may run now in the Apollo or the Chipping Norton.
“She’s also in the Newmarket; we might not run her for a month and run her in the Newmarket.
“The way she’s won today, why can’t she win the Apollo and the Chipping Norton?”
Leading Jockey Blake Shinn delivered a superb ride on Appearance, pulling such a gap late that a closing sprint was not required to ensure to win.
She’s one of our favourite mares in the stable alongside streamer and it’s just fantastic to have her back
“She’s come up really well this preparation” Shinn said after the race.
“We knew we had her close to the mark today and it’s just really great to see her put a few like that away today in such dominant fashion.
“Throughout the race I was pretty confident; I was following Sizzling and had Boban inside me, so was in a dictating position throughout and the speed was very solid.
“It’s going to be a great autumn not just for her, but I think for our while stable so it’s very exciting.”
Despite taking up a familiar position in the race’s early stages, Boban was unable to find the same turn of foot that led to five straight victories over the 2013 Spring Carnival, finishing well off the pace.
