David Payne’s five-year-old galloper Centennial Park claimed an upset win at Rosehill on Saturday, beating home a field of more fancied rivals in the 2011 Expressway Stakes.
The first Group race of the annual Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival, the $200,000 Expressway Stakes (1200m) was tipped to be won by glamour mare Hot Danish who started the $2 favourite.
However, despite Les Bridge’s seven-year-old taking the lead early and setting the pace, it was Centennial Park ($11) and in-form hoop Corey Brown who produced the run of the day.
Storming home through the middle, Centennial Park won the Expressway Stakes just under a length ahead of promising four-year-old Love Conquers All ($3.20) who was able to hold off eventual third placegetter Hot Danish in a photo-finish for second.
The victory was long overdue for Thorn Park gelding Centennial Park, who before Saturday had not won a race since their success in the Group 3 AAMI Business Insurance Stakes (1400m) at Flemington back in October 2009.
Centennial Park has now won seven of their 24 race starts for $664,350 in prize money, and despite having pulled up slightly sore from their Expressway Stakes victory, is on track to run in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) next at Rosehill on February 19.
