Expressway Stakes 2011 Field & Barriers

February 2nd, 2011

The final field of acceptors and barrier draw for this Saturday’s $200,000 Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill Racecourse are out with multiple Group 1 winning mare Hot Danish the top-liner following the withdrawal of hulking sprinter Hay List.

Connections have opted to save Hay List for the $750,000 Group 1 Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on February 19, where the boom galloper will run first-up against the mighty Black Caviar.

Les Bridge’s seven-year-old daughter of Nothin’ Leica Dane, Hot Danish will now start the favourite in the 2011 Expressway Stakes odds at Luxbet especially after drawing ideally in barrier one.

A winner of successive Group 2 races during the spring, Hot Danish most recently finished third to Sacred Choice in the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) on Victoria Derby Day.

Resuming in the Expressway, Hot Danish further staked her claims with a comprehensive two length trial success at Warwick Farm on January 24 and will take some catching on Saturday.

David Payne’s One Cool Cat four-year-old Winter King is the other notable defector from the Expressway Stakes field set to face off against Reward For Effort in the Listed JRA Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday instead.

Local trainer Payne is still represented in the Expressway Stakes field with Centennial Park, the Thorn Park gelding due to jump from barrier four with Corey Brown aboard in their first-up autumn start.

Other highly-rated gallopers looking to cause an upset Expressway Stakes result on Saturday include the Chris Waller-trained Danleigh also first-up for the season, Gai Waterhouse’s consistent Danehill Dancer six-year-old Lorne Dancer, the John Thompson-trained Count Encosta and Border Rebel.

Tamworth-based runner Border Rebel has drawn mid-field in barrier five, the Johannesburg five-year-old having their third start for the season after running third in the Listed Carrington Stakes (1100m) at Randwick on New Year’s Day and then fifth in the Listed Canterbury Classic (1100m) last start.

The 2011 Cleanevent Expressway Stakes will run as Race 6 at Rosehill on Saturday.
